Unknown RM Commando group possibly during training
Photo courtesy of Clare Ash who adds "RM Commando 1942. My great uncle Wally Todd sent the photo to my grandparents, his uncle and aunt, Jim and Edie Futcher. I note there is a photo on this site with Marine Todd in it. 46 RM Commando Z troop, second row from back on the right side end. I think Wally Todd is the miserable looking one in the same position in my photo, although I can't be sure. Can anyone help me with his RM career? His name was William Alfred Wallace Todd, known as Wally, b. 1912, Westbourne, W. Sussex"
.
**Gallery Admin - It is unclear as to exactly what unit these men are from. The officer in the centre foreground looks very like Jimmy Dunning who from 1943 was an Officer Instructor at the Commando Basic Training Centre, but as yet I have been unable to have this confirmed. If the year given is correct, then it cannot be 46 RM Cdo as they were not formed until 1943. It could only be 40 or 41. As such the group will for the time being classed as unknown until more information comes to light.Pete R.

I think that this group is from the RM Commando, latterly 40 RM Commando. There is a similar photograph in Jeff Beadle's book, the Light Blue Lanyard which shows the group dressed the same and the Platoon Commander with a walking cane of some sort. The Commando called for trained volunteers from across the Royal Marines and that included 102 RM Brigade which had an Argyll battalion to bring the brigade up to strength. As the Argylls were serving with the Marines they were considered eligible to volunteer for commando training. The rig in the RM Commando in the early days at the Depot Deal was as you see in the photograph - cap comforter, toggle rope and leather jerkin over battle dress.

Not Wally but Douglas Todd
I have found that Wally was in the Home Guard. His brother Douglas was a RM Commando, but I don't know where he is in this photo.
