Updated 18/11/12 from Brian Moyse : "5885246 James (Jim) Frederick Dix was in the Northampton and Suffolk Regiments before joining the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment & then 4 troop of 3 Commando. At this time plus post war Jim was friends with 5948937 John (Jack) Ernest Leech MM & Bar.According to Jim's obituary he was awarded his BEM for "Bravery in action" with no details given. According to Jack Leech's obituary they were both part of the advance to relieve "Pegasus Bridge".Part of Jack Leech's obituary reads:
"Two days later he silenced a German MG Post with a hand grenade and with his brother officers killed or wounded led a successful counter attack during which he was wounded and evacuated to England. He was awarded a Bar to his MM for this action. Some months later behind enemy lines he was badly wounded in an attack and was of to hospital once more.On both occasions when he was hit his friend Jimmy Dix carried him from the battlefield".
All of this comes from "The Wasp " which is the official journal of The Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. The regimental archives in Luton were very helpful,I talked with a Nigel Lutt who knew both men due to their post war involvement with the Regimental museum.Although they have the Wasp archives they have no record of any medal citations."
