This article written by Captain Derek Oakley MBE of the RM Historical Society was published in the Sept/Oct/2002 edition of the Globe and Laurel and is reproduced here with their permission. My thanks to their editor John Hillier, and to Tom Sherman OBE who provided the copy. Tom was formerly No.2 Cdo., and post war CO and Honorary Colonel of the RMR Merseyside.
This document should be read in conjunction with a copy of an official request for the new green beret requested and signed by Mountbatten who was Chief of Combined Operations dated 1st May 1942. [view report].
The reader should also note that there are photos in the gallery of Brigadier Laycock and Lord Lovat inspecting No.4 Commando at Barrassie Street School in September 1942. All OR’s are wearing the Green Beret in those photos [view….].
