Photos of 4 Commando

There were originally 10 troops. After the change from Special Service Battalions to full Commando, they reduced to 6 troops 'A' through to 'F'. After Normandy and before Walcheren a further change was made, and the troops were identified by number rather than letter (source. Major Jimmy Dunning). When viewing troop photos be aware that individuals on occasions moved troops.

**It should be noted that in June 1945 whilst No.4 Cdo were at Recklinghausen in Germany, Major Jimmy Dunning (No.4 Cdo. and Instructor CBTC) states in his book "The Fighting Fourth": "At the end of June, 233 other ranks were posted to Nos. 3 and 6 Commandos back in England, who were earmarked for the war in the Far East, which had yet to be concluded".**

Major Dunning further adds: " In September with the war over, No.4 Commando, still in Germany, were reinforced by Officers and men, with high release numbers, from Army Commandos in England which had no operational role or commitments. No one knew that a decision had been made to disband the Army Commandos, and no official or public announcement had been made"
(and presumably from the writing below sent to him by George Scanlon MM many years ago) has the following written on the back in pencil:

Lowering a casualty 200 feet using the cliff haul method, Wales May 1943. Return to G. Scanlon, Troon.

In pen someone else has written:

Fred Ham being lowered E.B. in charge of operation. Beat all previous times taken. Major John Hunt very pleased

We have photos of Frederick Ham and Ernie Brooks in our gallery. Both were attached to No.4 Cdo from the Glosters. Click on this link to view one of them:
