N.B. from Pete R. A copy of this photo was sent in by the family of Leslie Fosbery of No.4 Commando. He identified it as No.3 Commando. **It should be noted that in June 1945 whilst No.4 Cdo were at Recklinghausen in Germany, Major Jimmy Dunning (No.4 Cdo. and Instructor CBTC) states in his book "The Fighting Fourth": "At the end of June, 233 other ranks were posted to Nos. 3 and 6 Commandos back in England, who were earmarked for the war in the Far East, which had yet to be concluded".**

So there is a mix of men from both.

Update 29/8/11 from Pete R. "I spoke with Major Jimmy Dunning today regarding this photo. He advises me that this would have been in late 1942 or 1943 as Donald Gilchrist is in there. By this time the Commando had already changed from 10 troops to 6 troops 'A' - 'F' "

Update 31/8/11 from Pete R. Jimmy Dunning identifies Hutchison Burt as the officer on Donald Gilchrist's left. He was later promoted Captain and awarded the Military Cross. On Gilchrist's right is Sgt. Major Heaynes He was a boxer and fought for No.4 Cdo. in the lightweight category (scorecard from one match is on our site), alongside him is Sgt. Woodward

Update from Stephane: "After Lieut. Burt are Sgt Mercer, Sgt Harris, Cpl Dodds, L/Cpl Redman, L/Cpl Jackson, L/Cpl Fletcher" and "also included are Alan Coote, John Skerry, Harvey O'Hara"

8/2/10 update by Pete R. " Erika Garrett, whose great uncle was Pte Kenneth George Hellyer, has informed me that he is in this photo. Her mum has recognised him and she also has a copy of the same photo. He is second row down from the back, second from the left with another commandos arm resting on his shoulder. On the reverse of the photo that she has is written Keswick. Erika has informed me that the chapel may be Lake Road Chapel in Keswick. She sent me a modern photo of the chapel and I agree. After making enqs with the Minister and others in the area I can now confirm the location as outside Lake Road Chapel, Keswick.
