Awarded the M.M. in recognition of gallant & distinguished service during his escape after he was taken prisoner of war at Mateur, Tunis, on Thursday 19 December 1942. He had been wounded in the elbow at the time. Initially imprisoned in Italy, he was transferred to POW Camps including Stalag V111B at Lamsdorf and Blechhammer. His final escape was on 25 June 1944 from a working party at Oppeln in Germany.

In 1940 he also received a Mention in Despatches.

25542 Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Martin Henry Winterburn, of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), in Korea, pays a Korean workman his monthly wage in hwan notes. In addition to his normal duties as CSM, Warrant Officer Winterburn is also unit labour officer, in charge of the indigenous employees of 1RAR's Gallipoli Camp.

One of 25542 Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Martin Henry Winterburn's most prized possessions is his Commando Service Certificate (British). At the end of the Second World War all surviving commandos were presented with one of these certificates listing the places in which they saw commando duty, and signed by the chief of combined operations. Places listed on CSM Winterburn's certificate are France, Norway, Jugoslavia [sic], Italy, Albania, and Germany. CSM Winterburn received the Military medal (MM) and was Mentioned in Despatches. CSM Winterburn is now a member of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) in Korea.
