The Memorial at Sachsenhausen is in memory of not only those executed on the above raid, but of all the British and Commonwealth Forces, many still unknown, who were interned and perished there, or elsewhere, at the hands of their captors. These include the Commandos from Operation Checkmate.

Cpl. Sverre Granlund, a Norwegian, was attached as a scout/guide to the No 2 Commando raiding party for Operation Musketoon.

Sgt. Djupdræt, a Norwegian, was attached as a guide/scout to the No 2 Commando raiding party for Operation Musketoon.

Photo courtesy of Stig Olav Johansen who adds that Sgt. Djupdraet evaded initial capture but was badly wounded by a German who bayoneted him in the stomach in Fykandalen, inside a cabin. He died of his wounds in hospital in Bodø on Sept. 24th. 1942, three days after the Musketoon Operation.

L/Sgt Richard O'Brien, No. 2 Commando 2 troop, one of the men who returned from Operation Chariot, the raid on St Nazaire. He was awarded the DCM for his actions during Operation Musketoon just 6 months later. The following year he was awarded the Military Medal for his gallantry between the 10th and 18th Sept. 1943 during the battles of Salerno, Dragone Hill, and Piegolette .

These Commandos were executed under Hitler's Commando Execution Order, at Camp Sachsenhausen, Berlin, 23rd October 1942. They were part of the Commando raid codename Operation Musketoon.
